Background Of The Unit
On 11th January 2006, the cabinet has approved the proposal to develop
integrated hospital programme. Putrajaya Hospital has been chosen as one of the
location for the first phase of the pioneer project. One of the efforts to integrate complementary
medicine into the existing public health care
system is by implementing this pioneer project. The role of this unit is to
provide a complementary traditional treatment, which in addition to allopathic
treatment and not as primary treatment. This unit started its
operation on 3rd March 2008 by offering traditional Malay massage
and acupuncture treatments for post-stroke and chronic pain patients. On 1st
October 2008, our unit started to offer another new service, which is herbal
treatment. The herbal treatment was given to cancer patients as an adjunct to
conventional cancer treatment. On 17th July
2009, the postnatal massage service was provided exclusively for mothers who
delivered at Putrajaya Hospital.
Services Provided *** Upon making a traditional Malay
massage, acupuncture or herbal treatment appointment, patients need to present
referral letter.
Traditional Malay Massage
Traditional Malay Massage is divided into 2
categories, namely : o Wellness massage. For the
purpose of wellness, the massage helps in reducing anxiety, improving quality
of sleep and inreducing stress. o Therapeutic massage.
Therapeutic massage helps to improve the condition of particular illness and in
reducing severity of pain. However, only therapeutic
massage is being offered in this unit. The scope of service is : o Chronic pain (such as back
pain, joint pain and others). Chronic pain does not include chronic diseases
such as hypertension, diabetes and others. o Stroke Massage is contraindicated as listed conditions : o Deep Vein Thrombosis o Acute infection, swelling tissue o Bleeding o Open and/or new
wound o Bone fracture o Skin graft o Malignancy or cancer o Inflammatory muscle disease o Pregnancy Side effects which maybe experienced after a massage
treatment : o Temporary pain or discomfort o Bruise, swelling o Allergic to massage oil
Postnatal Massage

The postnatal massage service comprises of : o Malay postnatal wellness
massage (including breast care) o Midwifery care ·
The objectives of Malay postnatal wellness massage are to : o Relieve muscle
cramps/fatigue after labour o Create awareness and
promote safe practice of traditional postnatal care. o Encourage breastfeeding
program ·
The aim of breast massage is to improve the flow of breast milk,
increase breast milk production, and prevent breast engorgement. ·
At T&CM Unit, the midwifery care practice includes whole body
massage, hot compression (bertungku) and body wrapping/binding (bengkung).
It is usually carried out 3-7 days after normal delivery. ·
The objectives of midwifery care are: o Early detection of
postpartum complications o To promote safe and good
practice of Malay postnatal care o To create awareness of the
safe usage of herbal during confinement period ·
Mothers who delivered by Caesarean are excluded from this postnatal
massage service.

Acupuncture is
performed by inserting sterilised disposable needles, applying heat or
electrical stimulation at a precise acupuncture points. ·
This is to
encourage body natural healing and to improve body function. ·
The service is for
: o Chronic pain. For instance, lower back pain, migraine,
joint pain, etc. Chronic pain does not apply to chronic diseases (e.g.
diabetes, hypertension) o Stroke ·
Below conditions
are contraindicated for acupuncture treatment : o Bleeding and clotting disorder or taking anticoagulant
drug o Pregnancy o Medical emergencies and/or surgical conditions o Malignant tumour ·
Acupuncture
patients may have side effects such as : o Dizzy o Pain during insertion or withdrawal of acupuncture
needle o Local pain after acupuncture needle being withdraw
Herbal Treatment
·
To provide Chinese
herbal treatment to cancer patients referred by CONSULTANTS/SPECIALISTS
of Ministry of Health’s hospitals. ·
Herbal treatment
serves as an adjunct to conventional cancer treatment (i.e. surgery,
radiotherapy and chemotherapy). ·
The herbal
treatment is to : o Improve patients’ quality of life o Strengthen patients’ immune system o Reduce the symptoms related to cancer treatment, such
as nausea, vomit, loss of appetite, etc. ·
This service
focused on 6 most common type of cancer, which are : o Breast cancer o Lung cancer o Cervix cancer o Nasopharynx cancer o Colorectal cancer o Liver cancer ·
The herbal
practitioner prescribes the Chinese herbs according to Traditional Chinese
Medicine theory. The herbs are in powder sachet form. Just add in hot boiling
